Previously as a financial adviser and now as a speaker/money coach, one of the first questions I asked any potential new individual or corporate client was, “What is the reason you are here?”.  It may seem obvious but it’s more than just about understanding their financial goals, it’s about uncovering the deeper motivation behind those goals. I need to understand “Your Why” as the how and what are easy once we know what drives you or your company.

Finding what motivates you, or as we call it ‘Your Why’, is incredibly important. It’s the driving force that keeps you going, even when things get tough. It’s like having a compass that points you in the right direction, making every decision clearer and more purposeful.

Imagine saying you want a million dollars in the bank. That’s a great goal, but without a clear reason why you want it, that goal can feel empty and difficult to achieve. Are you looking for financial security for your family? Do you want to travel the world? Is it about starting a business that you’re passionate about? The clearer your why, the easier it is to create a plan and take the steps necessary to achieve it.

Your Why doesn’t need to be grand or elaborate. It simply needs to be personal and important to you. Maybe it’s about providing a good education for your kids, retiring early, or having the freedom to pursue a hobby you love. Whatever it is, it should resonate deeply with you.

This framework can also be applied in businesses. For business executives and team leaders, understanding and articulating your Why can be a game-changer. In this ever changing world, it’s easy to get caught up in daily tasks, quarterly targets, and the bottom line. However, losing sight of your core motivations can lead to burnout, lack of direction, and decreased productivity.

Finding and embracing your Why is crucial for business success as it enhances leadership, guides strategic decision-making, improves team dynamics, ensures sustainable growth, attracts and retains talent, and fosters strong customer connections.

So, what is your Why? Take some time to reflect on this question, both as an individual and as a leader. Think about what truly motivates you and why you lead the way you do. Encourage your team to do the same. Once you find your Why, you’ll find that everything else becomes more manageable. You’ll have a clearer vision, a stronger sense of purpose, and a roadmap to guide you and your business to success.

Once you have your Why, lets make it happen. An article I wrote about achieving your NY Resolutions can also be applied to your Why, so have a look: Let’s finally get real about New Year’s resolutions
