Let’s be honest – most of us didn’t grow up learning about money in a meaningful way. Sure, we were told to save, maybe not rack up too much credit card debt, and to work hard. But when it comes to making financial decisions that truly reflect who we are and what we value, many of us are still flying blind.
That’s where values-based financial planning comes in.
At The Money Sandwich, we often say that financial resilience isn’t just about having a healthy superannuation balance or a well-diversified portfolio. It’s about living intentionally, knowing why you’re saving, investing, or paying down debt in the first place. When you align your financial decisions with what matters most to you, your money becomes more than just numbers in a bank account. It becomes a tool for designing a life you actually want to live.
So, What Do You Value?
Maybe it’s quality time with your family, travelling more, giving back to your community, or retiring early to pursue a passion. Whatever it is, your values should be front and centre when it comes to your money.
For instance, if freedom and flexibility are important to you, building multiple income streams (like investment properties or dividend-yielding shares) could help you work less and live more—just like we shared in our recent Get Smart With Money webinar. One of our clients, a single mum, wanted to spend more time with her kids. With a clear financial strategy aligned to that goal, she’s now on track to do just that—without waiting until retirement.
Breaking Free from “One Day” Thinking
Too many people fall into the trap of the “One Day” myth. You know the story: “One day I’ll sort my finances out… when I get that pay rise… when the mortgage is smaller… when life isn’t so busy.”
But here’s the truth—there’s no perfect time. And the longer we delay, the more we risk living a life that’s out of sync with what really matters to us. The key is to start small but start now. Even something as simple as tracking where your money goes each month can be a powerful first step toward more conscious, values-driven choices.
What Does a Meaningful Life Cost?
That’s not a trick question. It’s one we encourage you to explore. Budgeting doesn’t have to feel restrictive; in fact, it should be freeing. It’s not about cutting back for the sake of it. It’s about ensuring your spending reflects your priorities.
Something I like to say is “it’s not how much you earn that makes you rich—it’s what you do with it.” You could be earning a six-figure salary and still feel financially stuck if your money isn’t going where your heart is.
Your Call to Action
This month, take 15 minutes to ask yourself:
-
What are the top three things I truly value?
-
Is my spending aligned with those values?
-
What’s one small change I can make today to move closer to a life of meaning?
It’s not just about managing money—it’s about mastering it with purpose.
Because at the end of the day, money is just a means to an end. And the real question is: What kind of life are you working towards?
